As a Biology teacher, I spent years being able to explain photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and the nitrogen cycle to teenagers in under ten minutes. But it took me far longer to properly understand the science of my own brain.
That's the strange thing about the ADHD brain - it's one of the most researched areas in neuroscience, and yet most people, including plenty of teachers, only ever hear the surface-level explanation: "it's about attention." That's true, but it barely scratches the surface of what's actually going on.

How Dopamine Affects the ADHD Brain
Dopamine is often introduced as the "feel-good chemical," but that's not quite its job. Dopamine's real role is motivation and reward - it's the signal that tells your brain "this is worth paying attention to and doing something about."
In a neurotypical brain, dopamine flows fairly steadily in response to a wide range of tasks - including boring but important ones, like finishing a worksheet or even brushing your teeth. That steady flow is what makes it possible, even if not always pleasant, to push through unremarkable tasks.
In an ADHD brain, dopamine regulation works differently. Levels tend to be lower at baseline, and the system is far more selective about what it releases dopamine for. Tasks that are urgent, novel, interesting, or high-stakes can trigger plenty of dopamine - which is exactly why someone with ADHD might power through a passion project for six hours straight. But tasks that are routine, repetitive, or simply "important but boring" often don't generate enough dopamine to get the brain moving at all.
It's not about importance, it's about interest, urgency, novelty, and challenge. Knowing a task matters isn't the same as your brain releasing the chemical signal needed to start it.
What Is Executive Function, and How Does ADHD Affect It?
Executive function is the brain's management system - the set of mental processes that let you plan, organise, initiate, monitor, and adjust your own behaviour. Think of it as the manager sitting in the front office of your brain, not doing the work itself, but making sure the right work happens at the right time.
Executive function isn't one single skill - it's a collection of several, and ADHD tends to affect all of them to varying degrees:
Working memory - holding information in mind while you use it (the reason you walk into a room and forget why, or lose your train of thought mid-sentence)
Inhibition - the ability to pause before reacting (interrupting, impulsive decisions, blurting things out)
Task initiation - actually starting something, even when you know how and want to
Planning and prioritising - breaking a big task into steps, and figuring out what matters most
Emotional regulation - managing frustration, disappointment, or overwhelm without it derailing everything else
Cognitive flexibility - shifting attention from one task to another without getting stuck
This is largely governed by the prefrontal cortex - the brain's most "executive" region, and one of the areas most consistently shown in research to develop and function differently in people with ADHD. Why Understanding the ADHD Brain Actually Matters
Here's the part that changed how I saw my students, and myself: struggling with a task isn't a character flaw - it's a mismatch between the task and how the brain's motivation and management systems actually work.
Struggling to start an essay isn't laziness - it's a task-initiation and dopamine problem.
Losing track of a conversation isn't rudeness - it's working memory being pulled elsewhere.
Getting overwhelmed by a multi-step project isn't weakness - it's a planning and prioritising challenge.
Blurting something out isn't a lack of manners - it's an inhibition delay of milliseconds, not a decision.

It means the starting point has to be understanding the actual mechanism, rather than trying to white-knuckle through it with willpower - which, as we now know, was never really the tool for the job in the first place. ADHD Brain-Based Strategies That Actually Work
Once you understand dopamine and executive function as the real players here, a lot of ADHD strategies suddenly make more sense - they're not random life hacks, they're targeted at specific mechanisms:
Body doubling works because having someone else present adds a layer of external accountability and novelty that boosts dopamine and task initiation.
Breaking tasks into tiny steps works because it reduces the working-memory and planning load of a task, making it easier for executive function to engage.
Timers and urgency work because deadlines are one of the most reliable dopamine triggers ADHD brains respond to.
External systems (visible lists, alarms, environment design) work because they take pressure off working memory and executive function, and put structure into the environment instead.
